Observation of light-by-light scattering in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector

This Letter describes the observation of the light-by-light scattering process, γγ→γγ, in Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02  TeV. The analysis is conducted using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.73  nb−1, collected in November 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Light-by-light scattering candidates are selected in events with two photons produced exclusively, each with transverse energy EγT>3  GeV and pseudorapidity |ηγ|<2.4, diphoton invariant mass above 6 GeV, and small diphoton transverse momentum and acoplanarity. Relativistic Kinematics and Phase Space

Here we present a list of the most important formulae needed for calculating relativistic collisions and decays. It includes one-to-two and one-to-three body decays, and the two-to-two scattering process both in the center of mass and laboratory frames. It also includes simplified general formulae of one, two and three-body Lorentz invariant phase space. No explicit calculation is performed, however the reader is highly encouraged to reproduce the results presented here.

Improved description of the pion-nucleon scattering phenomenology in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory

We highlight some of the recent advances in the application of chiral effective field theory (chiral EFT) with baryons to the $\pi N$ scattering process. We recall some problems that cast doubt on the applicability of chiral EFT to $\pi N$ and show how the relativistic formalism, once the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance is included as an explicit degree of freedom, solves these issues. Finally it is shown how this approach can be used to extract the $\sigma$-terms from phenomenological information.

The angular dependence of the scattered intensity and of spin polarizationP(Θ) is investigated as a function of the target temperature. The influence of hydrogen on the scattering process by a gold target is investigated too.

First Look at Two-Loop Five-Gluon Scattering in QCD.

We compute the leading colour contributions to five-gluon scattering at two loops in massless QCD. The integrands of all independent helicity amplitudes are evaluated using d-dimensional generalised unitarity cuts and finite field reconstruction techniques. Numerical evaluation of the integral basis is performed with sector decomposition methods to obtain the first benchmark results for all helicity configurations of a 2 to 3 scattering process in QCD.

Performance of ATLAS tracking detector

The track and vertex reconstruction algorithms of the ATLAS Inner Detector have demonstrated excellent performance in the early data from the LHC. However, the rapidly increas- ing number of interactions per bunch crossing introduces new challenges both in computational aspects and physics performance. The combination of both silicon and gas based detectors provides high precision impact parameter and momentum measurement of charged particles, with high efficiency and small fake rate. Author Correction: Induced unconventional superconductivity on the surface states of Bi2Te3 topological insulator

Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral p x + ip y wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi2Te3 topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral p x + ip y component.
